A League City woman has been charged with Attempted Kidnapping after allegedly trying to snatch another woman’s baby in a grocery store parking lot. It happened Wednesday, Oct. 24, about 4:45 p.m. as the mother sat with her one-year-old child in the parking lot of Krogers in the 200 block of South Egret Bay Boulevard, waiting for her husband, who was in the store, League City Police Sgt. John Jordan said.

“As she was waiting, the suspect, Melany James, 51, approached the vehicle and attempted to take the child from the mother,” Jordan explained.

A nearby witness saw what was happening and helped the mother subdue James until police arrived shortly thereafter, he said.
The mother of the child sustained scratches to her face and back and was treated at the scene by EMS personnel.

James was being held on a $20,000 bond.
