University of Houston-Clear Lake honored hard work and persistent dedication at the annual Faculty and Staff Awards.

UHCL President William A. Staples, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl A. Stockton, and Vice President for Administration and Finance Michelle Dotter presented 116 honors at the event, marking more than 1,510 combined years of service to the university.

Two faculty members were honored for 40 years of contributions to UHCL including Professor of Fine Arts Sandria Hu, who will retire this year, and Professor of Educational Foundations Robert Jones.

“It gives me great pleasure to recognize two members of the faculty who joined UHCL in its second year,” Staples said.
Both joined in 1975. A monetary gift in their names will be presented to the university’s Alfred R. Neumann Library, and their names will join the four previous recipients of the recognition on a permanent plaque at the entrance to the library’s Special Collections Room.

Executive Associate to the President Mary Ann Shallberg from the President’s Office was honored for 35 years of service, and her name will be added on a plaque to one of the six benches in UHCL’s Alumni Plaza.

Recipients of 30-year awards were Admissions Evaluator Sondra Brown from the Office of Admissions, Suite Secretary Olga Gonzalez-Wong from the School of Business, Professor of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems Sharon Perkins Hall and Associate Vice President of Information Resources Glen Houston.

Staples.

Faculty and staff with 30 years of experience have been honored in the past with the planting of a tree and a plaque in their honor at UHCL’s Liberty Park. As UHCL grows and changes, Staples noted, some of its traditions will grow and change as well.

“We will be adding two new buildings just east of the pond, and the pond itself will likely be incorporated into the landscape plan,” he said. “Because of this, we will be relocating the 30-year name plates and plaque to an equally appropriate new location and will share details when the construction and landscape plans are more fully developed.”

Faculty and staff with 20, 15, 10 and five years of service were also recognized.

Awards for merit, service, teaching and research were announced at the luncheon. The awards represent the highest awards the university bestows on its employees.

UHCL’s Hugh P. Avery Prize – the President’s Distinguished Staff Service Award was presented to Administrative Assistant Chris Owens from the School of Education, who was chosen from among university-wide nominations.
Staples also presented the Staff Merit Awards to Environmental Institute of Houston Senior Business Assistant Patti Koch, Office of International Admissions and Programs Executive Director Sameer Pande, Student Assistance Center Associate Director Kristi Randolph Simon and Copy Center Technician Margaret Garcia.

Five educators also received honors for their work and dedication. UHCL’s 2016 Distinguished Service Award winner was Professor of Instructional Design and Technology and Curriculum and Instruction Jana Willis from the School of Education, while the Distinguished Research Award recipient was Associate Professor of Software Engineering Lei Wu from the School of Science and Computer Engineering.

The Distinguished Teaching Award was presented to Associate Professor of Management Information Systems Gokhan Gercek from the School of Business. Senior Lecturer in Reading and Language Arts Nancy Wright received the Outstanding Lecturer nod and adjunct instructor Robert Worthy was designated this year’s Outstanding Adjunct, both from the School of Education.

Seventeen retiring faculty and staff members were also recognized for their dedicated service.

UHCL ranked for online programs by the U.S. News & World Report

January 28th, 2016

UHCLstackedUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake’s online programs have been ranked in the U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs in two categories, including overall graduate online business programs and the online Master of Business Administration.

“Anytime that our programs receive this type of national recognition, it validates the work that goes into creating and teaching an online program,” says UH-Clear Lake Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl A. Stockton.

In the 2016 Best Online Graduate Business Programs (non-MBA), UHCL moved up six spots from the 2015 ranking listing to number 61 out of 91 ranked programs throughout the country. The 2016 Best Online MBA Programs included a move for UHCL from 89 to 81 out of 163 ranked programs.

UHCL’s School of Business offers online graduate degrees in finance, human resource management and business administration, while undergraduate School of Business online degrees include general business and finance. Overall, the university offers five online bachelor’s degrees, eight graduate degrees and seven certificates.

A 2014 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group and co-sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium reported federal data showed that almost 5.3 million students were now taking one or more distance education courses, indicating a 3.7 percent increase in the number of distance education students over the previous year.

“The recognition from U.S. News & World Report speaks to the hard work of our top-notch quality of our faculty and their dedication to making the programs successful,” says School of Business Dean William T. Cummings. “We continue to make modifications to meet the needs of our online students whether taking classes in their home office down the street or from their living room a half a world away.”

The online rankings follow the U.S. News & World Report recognition of UHCL in its 2016 Best Regional Universities in the West rankings.

A light breeze, plenty of sunshine and a beautiful space made for a perfect setting on a Saturday afternoon in early May as University of Houston-Clear Lake friends gathered for the dedication of the Pat and Wendell Wilson Park, named after UH-Clear Lake Associate Professor Emeritus Patricia Potter Wilson and Capt. Wendell M. Wilson.

Through a special legacy gift from the Wilsons and a vision to protect the university’s natural setting, the enhanced park will include a native garden inspired by Wendell Wilson as well as a pond officially named Potter Pond to honor Pat Wilson.

“With the future development of the UHCL campus as a four-year university, the Pat and Wendell Wilson Park will be a place for teaching, learning, relaxing and reflecting by our students, faculty, staff and the broader community,” said University President Dr. Bill Staples. “I am sure in the future, students will tell one another that ‘I will meet you at Potter Pond’ and that this area will be a key meeting place on campus.”

Pat Wilson, a UHCL Distinguished Alumna and associate professor emeritus in UHCL’s School of Education, and her husband, Wendell, a former Air Force fighter pilot and retired Delta Airlines captain, have shown their support and passion for UHCL for decades.

Many long-time friends of the Wilsons were in the crowd for the dedication of Pat and Wendell Wilson Park May 3 including, from left, Betsy Bush, Kippy Caraway, Martha Ferebee, Lois Mohrhusen and Pat Hargrove.

An author of seven books and a former teacher for the military and Clear Creek School District, she received her master’s degree from UHCL in 1979 and her Doctorate in Education at University of Houston in 1985 where she received the UH College of Education Outstanding Graduate Student Award and was later selected as a UH Distinguished Alumna. In 1988, she joined the faculty  in UHCL’s School of Education where she helped shape the lives of educators in the greater Houston area. While a professor at UHCL, she received the prestigious President’s Distinguished Teaching Award and was the university’s Piper Award Nominee for Excellence in Teaching.

A pilot with the U.S. Air Force, Wendell Wilson flew more than 300 combat missions in Vietnam before returning stateside to train experienced South Vietnamese fighter pilots and others. After fulfilling his military commitment, he was hired as a pilot for Delta Airlines where he worked for 33 years until retiring in 2002.

Former Seabrook Mayor Gary Renola and his wife, Elaine, right, and former UHCL Associate Vice President Dion McInnis were among the many at the Wilson park dedication. McInnis began plans for the park before retiring.

Their volunteer service includes serving on boards and working with local community organizations such as the Lunar Rendezvous Festival, Friends of Evelyn Meador Library and Freeman Memorial Library, as well as the UHCL Alumni Association. In addition to their volunteer service, the two have been staunch supporters of UHCL students through the creation of the Dr. Patricia Potter Wilson School of Education Outstanding Students Scholarship Endowment and through financial contributions to many other scholarship programs. In 2009, the Wilsons were honored for their continued support with the President’s Cabinet Philanthropy Award and, earlier this year, were presented the President’s Cabinet Leadership Service Award.

Their experiences with the military and as world travelers, which includes visits to over 180 countries, reinforced their views about the importance of UHCL’s Liberty Bell project, leading to Pat being named a “Belle of the Bell” and Wendell recognized as a “Man of Honor.” In 2014, the university’s Office of Veteran Services honored Wendell’s service in the U.S. Air Force by renaming the office the Capt. Wendell M. Wilson Office of Veteran Services.

UHCL President William Staples, right, presents the 2015 President’s Cabinet Leadership Award to Pat and Wendell Wilson during President’s Cabinet Dinner.

Recognizing the friendship and gifts of longtime university friends, University of Houston-Clear Lake President William A. Staples hosted his annual President’s Cabinet Dinner in February. During the program, Staples presented the 2015 President’s Cabinet Leadership Award to Pat and Wendell Wilson, with the 2015 President’s Cabinet Philanthropy Award going to Sandra and Gary Mossman.

“Your support of UHCL makes a real difference in the success of UHCL,” said Associate Vice President for University Advancement Rhonda Thompson.

Thompson, who joined UHCL in summer 2014, welcomed attendees to the dinner program, with Staples also offering thanks to the guests. He then updated the group on university activities during the past year before inviting others to the lectern to speak.“This has been a very historic academic year for us,” said Staples. “We welcomed 8,665 students including our first freshman and sophomore students.”

Staples then introduced the President’s Cabinet Leadership Award recipients, Pat and Wendell Wilson.

“When I think about the Wilsons,” said Staples. “Two things come to mind: (1) They are highly devoted to education; and (2) Their dedication and service is remarkable.”

4-1 Gary and Sandra Mossman-1In addition to their extensive volunteer service throughout the community, the Wilsons have been staunch supporters of UHCL students through the creation of the Dr. Patricia Potter Wilson School of Education Outstanding Students Scholarship Endowment and through contributions to many other scholarship programs. They were previously honored for their support with the 2009 President’s Cabinet Philanthropy Award.

In 2014, the Wilsons showed their patriotic spirit by supporting UHCL’s Liberty Bell project, which led to Pat being named a “Belle of the Bell” and Wendell being recognized as a “Man of Honor.” Later that year, UHCL’s Office of Veteran Services honored Wendell’s time in the U.S. Air Force by renaming the department the Capt. Wendell M. Wilson Office of Veteran Services.

Over the last two years, the Wilsons graciously began funding the development of park space on campus that was commonly known as the Duck Pond. The space will be enhanced and UHCL will celebrate the Wilsons’ contributions that have been used to create a new garden and more. The Pat and Wendell Wilson Park will be introduced to the community later this year.

At the dinner, UHCL education student Nam Dinh thanked the Wilsons for their scholarship.

“It is an honor to speak here tonight,” said Dinh. “I’m in the second phase of my internship, and this scholarship made a difference to me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“What happens is that we hold on to you for life,” said Pat Wilson to Dinh referring to the recipients of the Wilson scholarship. “We are so excited about what is happening at UHCL, and it has been a pleasure working with everyone in University Advancement who has helped us from the beginning.”

“Pat and I are really pleased to be a part of this vibrant community,” Wendell Wilson added. “We are pleased about the garden, which will highlight an already existing beautiful area. We are also pleased to have a fountain that will help with the pond. The legacy gift keeps funding the garden for future generations.”

Staples recognized Sandra and Gary Mossman’s support with the President’s Cabinet Philanthropy Award.

“Just as we presented the Leadership Award to Team Wilson, we are presenting the Philanthropy Award to Team Mossman,” said Staples. “It’s a team effort and has been throughout their lives.”

“What the Mossmans have done at UHCL is create the Dr. Sandra Mossman Endowed Professorship in Educational Leadership, which will provide a professor selected by the university with support for travel, research, outreach and more.”

Superintendent of schools for CCISD 2003-2008, Sandra Mossman worked in several positions before becoming superintendent including as a counselor, principal, associate superintendent and deputy superintendent. Gary Mossman refined his engineering skills by beginning his career as president and co-founder of Southwest Specialty Chemical Co. and retiring as president of Dixie Chemical Co. He currently serves as chief operating officer and director of PLxPharma.

Sandra Mossman has been honored with numerous awards including, in 2014, the George B. Carlisle Distinguished Service Award from the Clear Creek Education Foundation. Meanwhile, Gary Mossman has been active in numerous professional organizations including having served on the Board of Directors for the American Chemical Council and Texas Chemical Council.

UHCL School of Education Dean Mark Shermis thanked the Mossmans for their contributions to the School of Education. “Our goal is always to attract and retain top faculty,” said Shermis. “The School of Education and I are grateful to the

Mossmans for their kind gift in creating the professorship.”

“We have had the pleasure of living here for almost 40 years and watching UHCL grow,” said Gary Mossman.

“We’ve also had the pleasure of watching as Dr. Staples’ vision has come true,” added Sandra Mossman, who also mentioned several of the partnerships between the university and CCISD. “UHCL is quite a university and unlike any other,” she added. “We salute the university. Go Hawks!”

Graduation at UHCL becomes a family affair

December 18th, 2014

During University of Houston-Clear Lake’s 2014 Commencement Ceremonies, one family celebrated big when Scott Allen graduated during the noon ceremony with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and his mother, Cindy, crossing the stage at the 5 p.m. ceremony, earned her Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences.

While many families get excited when a loved one crosses the stage to get his/her college diploma, the Allen family doubled that enthusiasm by having two members of the family earn bachelor’s degrees on the same day during the two University of Houston-Clear Lake Commencement Ceremonies.

Cindy and son, Scott, will never forget the day they received their diplomas.

“Graduating at the same time was not a grand plan,” says Cindy, who returned to UHCL at age 51 to complete her long-time dream of getting a bachelor’s degree. “But, it sure is exciting that it happened this way.”

Cindy crossed the stage at 5 p.m. during a ceremony that celebrated the graduates of the School of Human Sciences and Humanities and the School of Science and Computer Engineering. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences. Cindy’s youngest son Scott, 24, graduated at noon with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration during the ceremony for the Schools of Business and Education.

Having received an associate degree in Spanish from San Jacinto College approximately 30 years ago, Cindy says that at that time, life was busy. Her initial goal was to receive a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, but as a young married mother of one with another on the way, and a full-time job, she found herself unable to meet that goal.

Some circumstances in her life changed and the mother of three grown sons, with the encouragement of family and friends, decided to finally return to UHCL and finish that long-awaited goal of receiving a college education.

“As a young adult, I wanted to assist children with their education and become a teacher” explains Cindy. “That dream never died and during these last 3 ½ years, my determination of completing a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science has made me realize that I still can help students with their education, but in other ways.”

She is already putting into practice her goal of working with young people, having accepted a job in August as a site coordinator at Park View Intermediate in Pasadena in the ACE 21st Century after-school program. This is a job that she is passionate about and one that aims to enrich the lives of the 180 students enrolled in the program.

Scott, meanwhile, always had an interest in health care and knew a career in the field would be in his future. But, when he made it to UHCL, he really found his niche and changed from his original plan for a biology degree to the healthcare administration program offered through the university’s School of Business.

“My ultimate goal is to be a hospital CEO,” says the ambitious Scott. “I plan to go on for my combined Master of Business Administration/Master of Healthcare Administration degree, but want to take a little time off to work before launching into the graduate program.”

As a young boy, Scott says he always knew he would attend college – something that had been instilled in him his whole life. While in high school, he began working at a multi-specialty clinic through a co-op program. He eventually began full-time employment with the company working in medical records, which he continued throughout his college career.

His full-time workload and full-time class schedule did not keep him from being active at the university outside the classroom, and he just finished serving as vice president of the Healthcare Finance Association, a student organization affiliated with the national Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Although Scott says he is thrilled to be graduating, his thoughts are focused more on his mom’s achievement.

“I’m so happy for her – I’m more proud of her than I am of myself.”Two other Allens have already experienced the joy of commencement at UHCL. Keith received a Bachelor of Science in Management in 2010, while Ryan received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing in 2004. But, on Sunday, the day belonged to their brother and mother.

UH-Clear Lake experiencing record-breaking enrollment

November 11th, 2014

Seal_of_the_University_of_Houston–Clear_Lake copyUniversity of Houston-Clear Lake President William A. Staples has announced the largest enrollment in the university’s 40-year history for the fall 2014 semester.

Crossing significantly over the 8,000-student count, the final headcount for the semester is 8,668, an increase of approximately 6 percent more than the previous year and 13.4 percent over the past five years.

“We are excited by all the growth this semester,” said UHCL President William A. Staples, speaking during a university-wide annual meeting that included presentations by the Vice President for Administration and Finance Michelle Dotter and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl A. Stockton.

“We have had several significant changes including the addition of more than 400 freshman and sophomore students from approximately 70 different high schools.”

Staples explained that the average SAT score of the enrolled freshmen is 1062, with the average high school grade point average at 3.47 on a 4.0 scale. He added that of those new freshman and sophomore students, approximately 86 percent were attending full time.

UH-Clear Lake also experienced an increase in international student enrollment, up 38 percent from fall 2013 with a record-breaking 1,391 international students studying at UHCL.

Staples attributed the university growth to not only the 2011 approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to add freshman and sophomore students this year, but also to established and new partnerships with community colleges and local high schools. He also mentioned new degree programs established to meet the needs of the community.

“We have added the Bachelor of Science in Nursing designed specifically for registered nurses who want to get their bachelor’s degree,” said Staples. “The program began this fall at the UHCL Pearland Campus and, according to our research, will fill an important need for area nurses and hospitals requiring nurses to have a bachelor’s degree.”

He also spoke about the addition of the Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program, which received approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in July and will be open to educators in the spring 2015 semester through the university’s School of Education.

New initiatives include an upcoming redesign to the university’s website and the movement of the math center from under the umbrella of the School of Science and Computer Engineering to a university-level center providing support to all students as part of UHCL’s move from an upper-level university to a four-year university.

Staples, Stockton and Dotter concluded the presentation by thanking the faculty and staff for making the transition to a four-year university a smooth one.
