MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Bay Area will host free skin cancer screenings from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at its Nassau Bay location, 18100 St. John Dr.

The screening will be held on the building’s third floor, where the MD Anderson medical oncology clinic is located. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and parking adjacent to the building is free.

The screening includes a full-body examination but patients are not required to undergo the complete exam. Teams will look for and map suspicious freckles or moles, and may make a recommendation for possible follow up with a local dermatologist. Patients taking part will get a copy of their screening results.

The annual screening day is co-sponsored by the Houston Dermatological Society, American Cancer Society and American Academy of Dermatology.

For more information about the screening, please contact Nurse Navigator Diana Vasquez at 713-745-2396.

MD Anderson recommends these tips for reducing the risk of skin cancer:

  • Stay or play in the shade and avoid going outdoors from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen and lip balm liberally and reapply every two hours.
  • Choose sunscreen products with SPF30 or higher.
  • Select a wide-brimmed hat to protect your neck and ears and wear dark, tightly woven clothing.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide both UV-A and UV-B protection.
  • Skip the tanning bed.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is one of 12 cancers MD Anderson is targeting as part of its Moon Shots Program, which seeks to dramatically reduce cancer deaths.

MD Anderson’s location in the Bay Area offers a wide range of clinical and supportive services, including specialized surgical, medical and radiation oncology; infusion therapy; pain management; rehabilitation; nutritional assessments and education; and psychosocial support.
