League city recognizes its recreation specialist

The City of League City recognized Katrina Beecher for receiving the 2017 Recreation Professional of the Year for the Texas Recreation & Park Society East Region Award during City Council meeting on Jan. 26.

The award was originally presented to Beecher, who is a recreation specialist for the city, during the East Region TRAP’s annual conference Jan. 12.

Katrina is a model public servant who tirelessly serves our community,” said Interim City Manager John Baumgartner.  “Our goal is to provide outstanding customer service while enhancing the lives of our residents and its programs and initiatives like this that enables us to meet those goals.  We are very fortunate to have Katrina on our team and appreciate everything she does for our community.”

Families throughout League City continuously benefit from Beecher’s passion, excellence and commitment to providing recreational opportunities for all to enjoy.  Her efforts have led to the addition of three seasonal holiday camps, year-round homeschool physical education, a monthly kids night at Hometown Heroes Park, school day-out programs, fencing, and a variety of special needs programming.

She has also supported the city’s youth baseball and softball programs; increased enrollment in summer camp; added outdoor education programming at the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Nature Center; secured volunteers for a new bird watching program.

Beecher’s initiatives also generated an additional $75,000 in revenue for Parks Recreation which enables the department to provide additional opportunities to residents.

“Honestly, I’m humbled and honored to have received this award,” said BeecherFor me, the greatest reward though is having an opportunity to combine my passion with serving this community and seeing how our programs enhance the lives of our residents.

She is one a handful recreation specialists in the State of Texas to hold the Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, Master Naturalist and Leave No Trace certifications.

The Texas Recreation and Park Society is a nonprofit educational and professional organization founded to advance the profession of parks, recreation, and leisure services in Texas.  The organization is broken into five regions. League City lies within the East Region consisting of 50 cities and counties from the greater Houston and East Texas region.

League City selects director of Public Works Department

9-1XGabrielXMenendezLeague City has selected Gabriel Menendez of Tallahassee, Fla., to serve as the new director of its Public Works Department. He began work Aug. 8.

In this post, Menendez will provide direct oversight for streets, storm water management, traffic operations, wastewater treatment, water production, line repair, vehicle maintenance, and facilities maintenance. He will also assist in the development of the city’s strategic plan and helping to meet the increasing demands of the organization, improve operations, and enhance customer service to the League City community.

“I am looking forward to serving the community of League City,” Menendez said. “With more than 30 years of experience, I plan to assist in the implementation of the city’s Roadmap to the Future as well as the maintenance and operations of the city’s public works infrastructure.”

Menendez served as the director of the Public Works Department for Tallahassee for approximately 12 years prior to being selected for this position. His responsibilities included revitalizing a historical industrial area into a signature destination.

“Gabriel brings more than 30 years of experience in public works to League City,” said Deputy City Manager John Baumgartner. “He has a commitment to customer service and will build upon our successes in meeting the public works needs of our community.”

He has served as a city traffic engineer, transportation planning engineer and traffic manager throughout his career. Menendez also served as the District 14 traffic engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation. He attained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an Associate in Arts Degree from Florida State University. He also holds professional engineer licenses in Nevada and Florida.

Menendez has also been honored as the 2013 Public Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine for his efforts in advancing the City of Tallahassee’s revitalization project.

League City recognizes Citizen Volunteers

The City of League City awarded Jack Compton the 2015 Arthur Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award during the Aug. 25 City Council meeting.

Compton, president of the League City Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni Association, was honored for his volunteer work with the police department. He has volunteered more than 1,000 hours per year in an effort to bridge the communication divide between the law enforcement community and League City residents. Compton also helped organize the city’s Salute to Military Heroes week, morale events for League City first responders, and is an active volunteer who serves as a field trainer for the Volunteers in Policing program.

“I am honored to be recognized with this award. Art Hewitt was a warrior and a hero who spent the better part of his life working for a safer League City,” Compton said. “I am fortunate to be able to serve our community through the League City Police Department with Art’s goal in mind – a safer League City for all of us to come home.”

Cheryl Scott was also honored with the Above and Beyond Award for her volunteerism efforts with the League City Animal Shelter. Scott has devoted more than 454 hours in the past year to volunteering with the Animal Shelter to promote the many animals in need of a home. She has spent hours hwoing off the shelter in hopes of bettering the League City community.

Arthur Hewitt, who passed away in 2012, dedicated 61 years of his life to the League City community by serving as a League City volunteer firefighter and inspiring countless others to make a commitment to service in League City. League City honors Hewitt’s memory and keeps his passion for volunteerism alive through the Arthur Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award and by declaring Aug. 30 of every year as League City Volunteer Appreciation Day.

The nomination period for the 2015 Arthur Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award was July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. All nominations received by the nomination deadline were reviewed by a committee that included members of City Staff. The committee also chose to recognize a long-standing volunteer with the Above and Beyond Award.
